Original newspapers from The Times
The Times was first published as a broadsheet on 1st January 1785 under the title The Daily Universal Register it became The Times on 1 January 1788. The sister paper the Sunday Times was launched 20th October 1822.
The Times Library Edition was introduced on 2nd July 1917. This was a special edition printed on quality paper for libraries and royal palaces. It was renamed the Times Royal Edition in 1922 and continued to be printed until 31st December 1969.
On 3rd May 1966 The Times printed Headlines on the front page for the first time. Prior to this it carried announcements such as births, deaths & marriages.
Due to an industrial action from 1st December 1978 until 12th November 1979 no Times newspapers were printed during this period.
1st November 2004, the Times newspaper changed its format from a broadsheet to a compact format.
